New Consumers Credit Union Branch in Downtown Kalamazoo

Excitement for potential and new prospects surrounds the 13th new Consumers Credit Union branch in West Mich. that opened Wednesday, June 23, right in the heart of downtown Kalamazoo.

This new location at 125 S. Kalamazoo Mall, is a full service branch office offering downtown businesses, workforce, and patrons yet another way to open or access their accounts at Consumers Credit Union. The main driving force behind opening the branch downtown was to add more support to the 17 percent of the households that live downtown and bank with Consumers.

“We believe the benefits of being downtown is to serve and retain existing members as well as provide opportunities to add to the development of the Kalamazoo community,” Kit Snyder, president and CEO of Consumers Credit Union said.

The new location has restored and renovated local history from 1899. Many layers of interior wall were removed to reveal the original brick from the three-story Gilmore Building the year it was constructed. Other special features include a free coffee bar, children’s play area, and free wireless internet access. The location also features 3,000 square feet with the best banking technology available for members, including a full service lobby with ATM, an online banking center, experienced tellers, and a loan and member service area.

“The Kalamazoo Mall is a perfect fit and enables us to reach out to more downtown businesses and their patrons, in a new and innovative way,” Snyder said. “No other local institution like ours has a presence in the downtown mall area."

With operations beginning in 1951 Consumers has grown to more than $350 million in total assets and serves all of West Mich. The success of Consumers has come from the superior service and wise financial decisions that led to a secure foundation, with consistent earnings and 20 percent growth over the past 26 consecutive years.

“Controlled growth and prudent financial decisions versus blind ambition has resulted in this growth,” Snyder said. “It is not about being the biggest branch, but the best.”

Ways Consumers strive to be the best is providing an array of personal financial services, including free checking, free online banking, free bill pay, free mobile banking, auto loans, lines of credit, credit cards, home equity loans, investment services, and more. A full range of services offered at the downtown location include investment services, business services, business lending, new accounts, loans and more.

“Our new location on the Kalamazoo Mall gives members and employees an added level of comfort knowing where they bank and work is strong and growing,” Snyder said. “Consumers look forward to providing more access to businesses and members in downtown Kalamazoo, and superior service to all of West Mich.”
